Larrimah, meaning “Meeting Place” in the local Aboriginal language, is a small town 185km South of Katherine and lies along the Stuart Highway. We’d heard great things about the pub there and the fantastic free zoo located on the grounds….Did you say FREE zoo?…We’re in!!
As soon as we pulled up we instantly felt comfortable due to the friendliness of the locals, exuding warmth and cheerfulness while enjoying a beer or two out the front. We thoroughly enjoyed taking some photos of the famous Pink Panther statues in the buildings entrance, along with the other quirky bits and bobs. Even met a fellow Jimi Hendrix fan, who totally cracked us up and welcomed us genuinely to his land.
The zoo itself was amazing; a vision of awesomeness maintained by the love and sweat of the owner/manager Barry and his mate Kiwi. Barry could not have been more hospitable, even taking us into his office to meet his office manager Winnie (the wallaby) and even gifted the kids with their own meal worm pets!! What a legend!
We loved the whole zoo; home to so many amazing birds, emus, snakes, lizards, and Sneaky Sam the salt water crocodile (who eluded us in our visit…too sneaky!) We loved the chatty cockatoos, the screechy Eclectus Parrots and especially Lucy the wallaby that roams the grounds freely.
What a fantastic place to visit!
